چکیده

We present the first high-resolution X-ray study of emission line variability with superorbital phase in the neutron star binary LMC X-4. Our analysis provides new evidence from X-ray spectroscopy confirming accretion disk precession as the origin of the superorbital period. The spectra, obtained with the Chandra High-Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) and the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS), contain a number of emission features, including lines from hydrogen-like and helium-like species of N, O, Ne, and Fe, a narrow Ovii RRC, and fluorescent emission from cold Fe. We use the narrow RRC and the Heα triplets to constrain the temperature and density of the (photoionized) gas. By comparing spectra from different superorbital phases, we attempt to isolate the contributions to line emission from the accretion disk and the stellar wind. There is also evidence for highly ionized iron redshifted and blueshifted by ∼ 25, 000 km s. We argue that this emission originates in the inner accretion disk, and show that the emission line properties in LMC X-4 are natural consequences of accretion disk precession. Subject headings: accretion, accretion discs — pulsars: individual (LMC X-4) — binaries (including multiple): close — stars: neutron — X-rays: binaries

Long-term Properties of Accretion Disks in X-ray Binaries: II. Stability of Radiation-Driven Warping

A significant number of X-ray binaries are now known to exhibit long-term “superorbital” periodicities on timescales of ∼ 10 100 days. Several physical mechanisms have been proposed that give rise to such periodicities, in particular warping and/or precession of the accretion disk. Recent theoretical work predicts the stability to disk warping of X-ray binaries as a function of the mass ratio, ...

The superorbital variability and triple nature of the X - ray source 4 U 1820 – 303

We perform a comprehensive analysis of the superorbital modulation in the ultracompact Xray source 4U 1820–303, consisting of a white dwarf accreting onto a neutron star. Based on RXTE data, we measure the fractional amplitude of the source superorbital variability (with a ∼170-d quasi-period) in the folded and averaged light curves, and find it to be by a factor of ∼2. As proposed before, the ...

Orbital and superorbital variability and their coupling in X-ray binaries

We review X-ray flux modulation from X-ray binaries on time scales corresponding to the orbital period and those at longer time scales (so called superorbital). Those modulations provide a powerful tool to constrain geometry of the accretion flow. The most common cause of the superorbital variability appears to be precession. We then discuss two specific examples of discoveries of a coupling be...

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

Long - Term INTEGRAL and RXTE Observations of the X - Ray Pulsar

We analyze the observations of the X-ray pulsar LMC X-4 performed by the INTEGRAL observatory and the All-Sky Monitor (ASM) of the RXTE observatory over a wide energy range. The observed hard X-ray flux from the source is shown to change by more than a factor of 50 (from ∼ 70 mCrab in the high state to ∼ 1.3 mCrab in the low state) on the time scale of the accretion-disk precession period, whos...
